Tonight’s games were a carbon copy of those played back on Isolation Day 19, and I don’t have much to add beyond a couple of things I noticed:
Sushi Go! continues to be a game I really enjoy. Tonight, our daughter was racking up the points with her Dumpling cards. The points for them jump up depending on how many Dumpling cards you’ve collected, but you really need three or more to start getting into decent values.
Trying to collect them can be a bit of a risk, particularly with not many people playing, because with fewer cards in play around the players, there’s less to choose from, and less likely you’ll be able to get larger sets.
But she took advantage of the fact that my wife and I were trying to go for higher scoring combinations, and so we were ignoring the Dumplings completely in order to go for a bigger payoff with fewer cards. But again: There’s less chance of those efforts clicking, as well. So while my wife and I were trying to keep an eye on each other to try to avoid what the other was collecting but trying to get big-bang cards we could for ourselves, our daughter just gobbled up the Dumpling cards, and it really worked well for her.
So keep that in mind, Sushi Go! newbies: Don’t ignore lower value cards if you’ve a) detected that there are enough in the collective hands to make it worth trying for getting them in decent numbers, and b) if your opponents are shooting for higher value cards anyway, thereby leaving you to take advantage by getting the low-hanging fruit they’re passing on.
Fast Flip Pizza was fun yet again. What I thought was telling was that not even having read these reviews yet where I made this same point, my wife mentioned after the game how it’s consistently more fun than it seems it should be for what it is. If you’re hunting for a fast (and cheap) game to pick up for these trying, lengthy days, definitely give this one a shot.
