What I read this month

September proved way better than recent months in terms of reading time.

Finishing books was a whole other issue, mind you.

I didn’t get through one book — not one — but hey, not for lack of trying. Check out what I started and turned out not to be my speed:

Started and stopped
Fablehaven – Brandon Mull
[Galilee – Clive Barker]
Sea of Tranquility – Emily St. John Mandel
Tibetan Buddhism: A Very Short Introduction – Matthew Kapstein
Skippy Dies – Paul Murray
Dream Park – Larry Niven and Steven Barnes
Time Salvager – Wesley Chu

Reading
Crow Winter – Karen McBride

As I’ve mentioned before, many are the reasons I’ll stop reading a book. In most of the cases above, it was either something that bumped me from the story — build whatever world you want and I’ll happily follow you to get into your tale, but go against what you framed as possible, or the way a character would act, and I’m out — or enjoying the writing style but not enough happening soon enough to keep my interest, or (as I’ve also discussed) throwing the reader in proverbial water that’s too deep, and I’m gonna pass on that, too.

The Clive Barker book kind of needed its own category, because I’m not unhappy with the book, it’s simply that I have other books borrowed from the library that are on a deadline to return, and in typical Clive Barker style, Galilee is sumptuously written but is slow reading for that richness. I’ll definitely return to it, just when I have more time to savour the slow read.

Hoping to keep up this pace, and maybe actually finish some books (crazy!), in October.
