The new playlist at the LCBO for this period is very blues heavy.
Now listen, I like the blues just fine. At no point will I hear any blues song on the radio or streamed somewhere and wish someone would just turn it off or change it to something else.
But given the choice, blues also wouldn’t be fully half of what I listen to, which is the very much the case with this playlist. I mean, there are limits. You want to add more blues? Sure. But sprinkle it in to change things up a bit. Blues is like saffron in a recipe: A little goes a long way.
It also seems like an odd choice to play in the cheapest place in the province to get booze. Like, “Come on in, folks, you can listen to how a guy’s woman did him wrong while we sell you all the bourbon, scotch, and beer you want.”
Speaking of which, why no John Lee Hooker on this playlist? If you’re going to make a blues playlist right, there are some definite must-haves for it.
And it’s going to be a mental and emotional grinding of gears when we start our next playlist in another few weeks. Nothing like hearing the Rolling Stones at their bluesy best one day and hearing All I Want For Christmas Is You the next.
