Well, that’s better…
This month I decided to try going with the If You Can’t Beat’em, Join’em approach to reading. Rather than struggling to find/invent time to sit and read, I instead took advantage of using some of my busy time to listen to books instead.
I just put up a blog post talking about doing exactly this through November, with much success.
Is listening to a book the same as reading?
No. I think it’s generally agreed that it’s not the same. There’s been some debate as to whether or not it triggers the same areas of your brain listening to a book as it does when you’re reading it yourself. But I think it’s safe to say that it really simply can’t. Visual medium vs. audio, and all. But for the sake of categorizing in these posts, let’s not split hairs, shall we?
Ergo, here’s how it went this month:
Read
Swordheart – T. Kingfisher
Thorn Hedge – T. Kingfisher
The Rhythm of Time – Questlove, S.A. Cosby
Started and stopped
Wildwood – Writer: Colin Meloy, Illustrator: Carson Ellis
Reading
Nine Goblins – T. Kingfisher (actually reading that one!)
Hoping to take more advantage of audiobooks in December. Although the first one I’m going to try shortly, the opener in the chonological order of Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan (and affiliates) books, is 27 hours long.
27.
Swordheart was the 15 hour one I mentioned earlier, and that was a bit of a haul. Clancy’s book is approaching twice that. So probably 700-800 pages in printed length? Geez, Tom, reel it in a bit, would you?
Hoping the audiobooks I try next month are as well done as the ones I enjoyed in November.
Onward!
